Deadwooding buys more safety per dollar than anything else available on a mature tree. Dead limbs are the first thing a canopy sheds when wind arrives, and taking them out reduces what the tree can put through a roof without altering its health in any way. On a coast where the wind is an annual appointment, it is the most sensible maintenance there is.

Clearance is the other routine job: limbs off roofs, out of driveways, and away from the service drop into the house. There is a coastal detail here too - limbs resting on a roof abrade the shingles every time the wind moves them, and on this coast the wind moves them a great deal.

Heritage live oaks call for restraint rather than enthusiasm. These are trees whose shape is the reason they survive hurricanes, and aggressive reduction can undo in a morning what took two centuries to build. The work is measured: dead material out, genuinely hazardous limbs addressed, weight reduced where a limb has grown beyond what its union can carry - and nothing else touched. Anyone proposing to substantially reshape a mature live oak should be asked to explain exactly why.

Every cut is placed just outside the branch collar so the tree can seal it, and heavy limbs come off in three cuts so nothing tears bark down the trunk. We will not top a tree. Cutting a crown back to stubs forces weak regrowth from each wound and starts decay at every one, and the result five years on is more dangerous than what you began with - which on a coast that gets tested annually is a genuinely bad trade.
